Blue Mountains Legend Stories

BLUE MOUNTAINS ABORIGINAL LEGEND STORY

The Blue Mountains hold significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Aboriginal people, including the Darug, Gundungarra and Wiradjuri nation. The land is rich with sacred sites, rock art, and Dreaming time stories that reflect the deep connection between the indigenous communities and their environment.

The most well-known aspect of the Three Sisters is the Aboriginal legend that explains their origin. According to the Gundungarra and Darug people, the traditional custodians of the Blue Mountains, the Three Sisters were once three beautiful sisters named Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo.

The legend tells that the three sisters lived in the Jamison Valley and fell in love with three brothers from a neighbouring tribe. However, tribal law forbade them from marrying. The brothers, unwilling to accept this, decided to capture the sisters by force, leading to a fierce battle between the two tribes. To protect the sisters, a tribal elder and powerful witch doctor turned them into stone using his magical powers.

The intention was to reverse the spell after the danger had passed, but the elder was killed in the battle, leaving the sisters turned into stone forever. The Three Sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle of for generations to come.

BLUE MOUNTAINS ABORIGINAL ALTERNATIVE

Long ago, in the land now known as the Blue Mountains, there were Three Sisters named Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo. They were part of a peaceful tribe that lived in harmony with the land and its creatures. The sisters were known for their wisdom, courage and strong bond with one another.

One day a powerful and malevolent spirit named Kurrawon came to their valley. Kurrawon was envious of the harmony and beauty of the land and sought to disrupt it. He captured the Three Sisters, Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, intending to use their power to dominate the valley.

The sisters determined to protect their tribe and the land, decided to use their own powers to thwart Kurrawon. They called upon the ancient magic of their ancestors and transformed themselves into three towering stone pillars, hoping that this act would protect them from Kurrawon and keep their spirit alive in the land.

Their transformation was successful, but it came at a cost. The Three Sisters remained as stone, watching over their valley for centuries. Their sacrifice ensured that Kurrawon’s influence could not spread, and their tribe continued to live in peace, guided by the strength and wisdom of the stone sisters.

Over time, the legend of the Three Sisters grew, and they became a symbol of unity, strength and protection for all who lived in and visited the Blue Mountains. The Three Sister’s presence reminded everyone of the importance of harmony with the land and the power of selfless sacrifice.

And so, the Three Sisters continue to stand tall, a testament to their courage and everlasting guardian of their beloved valley.

This alternative legend emphasises the themes of self-sacrifice, protection, and the enduring spirit of the land, offering a different yet equally powerful interpretation of the Three Sisters story.
